Treasure Coast Boys Academy is a non-profit Teen Challenge residential program designed for boys who are struggling.
Ranchers enjoy a well-equipped gym and weight room, soccer, baseball, basketball, lacrosse, swimming, fishing, hiking, camping, rafting, horseback riding, and more. Professional fishing boats are kept busy taking the boys on frequent fishing trips in the area waterways and Atlantic ocean. Adventure is used as an opportunity to form strong relationships with each boy with a goal to bring about life-change.
Hiking, canoeing, camping, and outdoor activities are a major part of the ranch program. God’s great outdoors is a great place for each student to connect with each other and with God. It is through these fun outings that Vero Beach is so often able to get to the root of the issues in a boy’s life. It’s an easy place to talk and share hurts and pains; then the campfire that evening gives opportunity to further talk and pray for one another. These trips make memories which last a lifetime!
Treasure Coast Boys Academy is a residential therapeutic boarding school designed just for at-risk boys. It is an accredited, private school registered with the State of Florida. The ranch property is located on a 30-acre parcel, 10 miles west of Vero Beach, Florida in cattle and orchard country. The boys begin in a dorm setting and finish in a large home with house parents.
Treasure Coast Boys Academy helps at-risk boys who are struggling with behavior and troubling issues such as: falling grades, school suspension, anger, defiance, depression, attention deficit or attachment disorders.
This program can also resolve drug and alcohol abuse and addictions, which often coincide with behavioral issues. Staff works with each boy in cooperation with and participation of their family, bringing to the table a vast amount of experience. This therapeutic team helps repair the significant catalysts in each boy’s life that are bringing on their poor choices and self-destructive attitudes and behaviors.
In addition to therapy, Vero Beach provides focused and individualized academic attention for residents. Education goes on and credits are earned, year-round, but education is not the program’s primary focus. Developing character, integrity, hard work, and respect for others is the main concern of this program. Once those attributes are in place, education is more easily accomplished.
Individual and Group Therapy
Therapy is ongoing at Treasure Coast Boys Academy – all day, every day. Individual counseling sessions are not as frequent as the many 10-15 minute life coaching that takes place during school, work, or sporting events. As was once said, the outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man. A simple horse ride can provide a life changing conversation in a young man’s life at this boys ranch. The same can be said for a day on the lake fishing with a good mentor.
Each student at this ranch has an opportunity to spend time in the mountain wilderness. In the mountains each boy will experience camping, whitewater rafting, hiking the Appalachian Trail and other wilderness adventures. This experience is to show students that life can be exciting and adventurous without the negative influence that was a part of their life in the past.
Positive Peer Culture
Treasure Coast Boys Academy promotes and cultivates positive peer pressure. There are times when the students are taking charge. They run the chapel service every Tuesday evening. They take turns running work programs around the property. They are part of most everything that takes place on the property. It’s their home for the time they are here and they are encouraged to be involved in making and maintaining the Christ-centered culture.
Treasure Coast Boys Academy understands that success in life transformation depends on a strong loving family atmosphere when going home. Unconditional love with clear, well-defined boundaries are just a few of the family dynamics which the family can work on while the student is here.
Treasure Coast Boys Academy provides a safe haven for boys ages 12-18 years of age with out-of-control or at-risk behaviors. The program includes on-site schooling in a classroom setting, daily discipleship, chapel and worship. The young men are presented with opportunities for group and individual counseling, family counseling, organized sports and recreation. Leadership skills, developing integrity and the importance of work are learned through indoor and outdoor chores and responsibilities.
Common concerns of parents have been the following:
- • Skipping school, resulting in failing grades
- • Abnormal lack of ambition and depression
- • Outbursts of anger and destruction of home property
- • Absence from the home for extended periods of time
- • Stealing from family members
- • Poor choice of friends and suspected drug use
The first change must be a heart change…a knowledge that Jesus Christ has a purpose and a plan for each individual’s life. Guided biblical studies, exciting chapel services, the daily discipline of chores, and regular attendance in this program’s state-registered private schools give a once “out-of-control teenager” a second chance at attaining a bright future of successful living.
